The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) is one of the largest trade unions in the country, representing over 330,000 workers across various industries. Recently, the union has been in negotiations with employers to secure a collective agreement that will benefit its members.

A collective agreement is a legally binding agreement between an employer and a union that outlines the terms and conditions of employment for union members. These agreements typically cover issues such as wages, hours of work, and benefits.

In the case of NUMSA, the union has been negotiating with employers in the metal and engineering sector for a new collective agreement. The previous agreement, which expired in 2020, covered approximately 300,000 workers in the industry.

The negotiations have been ongoing since October 2020 and have been marked by several rounds of talks and disagreements between the union and employers. Both sides have been making concessions and trying to find common ground, but there are still some sticking points that need to be resolved.

One of the main issues that NUMSA is pushing for in the new collective agreement is a wage increase for its members. The union is seeking a 15% wage increase for the first year of the agreement, followed by a further 15% increase in the second year. Employers, on the other hand, have offered a 4.4% increase for the first year and a 5.3% increase for the second year.

Another issue that has been raised in the negotiations is the issue of temporary workers. NUMSA has called for the abolition of the practice of employing temporary workers, who are often paid lower wages and receive fewer benefits than permanent staff. The union is also seeking improved working conditions and benefits for its members, including better healthcare and retirement benefits.

The collective agreement negotiations are of great importance to both NUMSA and the employers in the metal and engineering sector. A successful agreement will ensure that workers are fairly compensated and have improved working conditions, while employers will benefit from a stable and productive workforce.

As the negotiations continue, both sides will need to be willing to compromise and find creative solutions to the issues that are being raised. A successful collective agreement will be one that is fair to all parties involved and provides a strong foundation for the industry to continue to grow and thrive in the years to come.
